What Are Your Highlights and Lowlights?
When my family is quiet around the dinner table, sometimes I ask my boys to share their “highlights” and “lowlights.”
In Arizona, in July, the lowlight is usually “It’s too hot.” And the answers from all of us in The Table House church have been no exception to that this year. We’ve had temperatures that hit 116, making a lot of our routine, such as kids’ activities, and teen break out question groups outside literally unsafe at times. THREE of our families had their air conditioning go out in the past month. And of course, with the heat, our attendance varies a lot as our fall and winter only members leave, and the rest of us take turns escaping to camps and coastal trips.
But, July’s highlights far outnumbered our low lights. God has just been so good, in providing for and blessing us, even in the middle of a heat wave.
Back to School Drive & Blessing of the Backpacks
One of the highlights of July is our Back to School Drive, and our Back to School Celebration and Blessing of the Backpacks Service.
Over the summer we collected supplies for both Jefferson and Taft Elementary, focusing primarily on black white board markers and spiral 1 subject notebooks. We have always felt strongly that this is one of many important ways that we can “work for the good of the city” we’re rooted in (Jeremiah 29:7) and send a message to our community that we are here for all of them. God provided, through a Thrivent Grant we had received, previous giving towards these types of outreach opportunities, and the generosity and wise gathering of our faith community. This year, in addition to this, Melisha and our children’s team assisted the kids of The Table in planning a fun dinner with activities and decorations, and several of us led in a special time of prayer and blessings for our own kids and school employees in the room, as well as for the students and teachers we would be sending the supplies to.
District Women's Conference & Family Celebrations
But, we managed to squeeze some more great things into the month before it all ended. I (Pastor Christy) had the privilege of speaking at the District Women’s quarterly conference on “Walking in Joy Together” and several of our ladies attended. We always enjoy connecting with our extended family in the Church in these ways! Within our individual families many wonderful things happened, which we celebrated collectively as a group…new jobs, birthdays, safe travels, a new hamster, and of course repaired air conditioning units. We are all so thankful!
